University of Karbala was founded in Karbala Holy City by the decision no. 15 from high authorities of Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 2002.
It has since grown in size and stature to become one of the most prestigious universities not only in the country but the region as a whole.
It is a foremost institution of higher learning, known for its innovative approach to academic management, human resource development and the pursuit of excellence in research and teaching in varied areas of the science, arts, humanities, medicine and social sciences.

It includes central computer rooms, training, and a computing advisory service English Language Laboratory at University of Karbala is a dedicated and fully integrated language lab with internet access, instructional software, audio and video computer applications.
The program of the lab offers a well established courses and curriculum for learning English as a foreign language.
It works to connect students as well as the staff of the university with learning opportunities and creative ideas to improve the ability of speaking English.
It aims to build lasting mutually beneficial relationships between the learners and the using of English Language.
The Students' Union is well known for its facilities and abilities.
The union provides a range of social activities, events and societies, plus a counseling service, advice centre and sessions. A meeting room is available for a number of purposes, including socials, religious observances, festivals and other exercise.
The Students' Union is run by elected student sabbatical presidents and executive officers and organized by a team of permanent staff.
There are four scientific centers have been established at University of Karbala: Law and International Studies Centre, Al Razzaza and Ayn Al Tamor Researches Centre, Consulting Engineering Center and recently, Centre of Translation has been established in College of Education.
These centers have earned an international reputation for high quality instructors training, higher degrees, research and consultancy in education and related aspects of professional practice and the social sciences.
As it looks ahead, these centers of excellence are- building on their strengths and moving into those new areas that will be crucial to the success of knowledge-based societies.

Law and International Studies Centre is originated in College of Law in 2003.
It contributes to found many training courses and sessions through specialized professors cooperating with some of civil society institutions.
Many important subjects have been discussed for employees of Karbala governorate foundations like (democracy, human rights and civil society).
Many sessions and negotiations symposiums have been .
preformed about different subjects as confrontation of terrorisms, federalism, law of ruling state and the future of Iraq.
Al Razzaza and Ayn Al Tamor Researches Centre is established to provide the facilities for scholars and researchers to fulfill their studies in the field of biology and environmental resources. It is possible to widen the centre in the future to include many domains.
University of Karbala holds an Open Day and Festival, usually in March each year.
Many conferences and symposiums have been held at the University recently.
They are considered to be as formal meetings held for the discussion of a particular subject and during which professors, instructors and individuals make presentations for their research and papers.
Namely, College of Medicine held many symposiums about certain events which was happened with Iraqi society, such as symposium on avian flu, the surgery of explosions injuries in the middle Euphrates area, and symposium on drugs.
In order to realize the above activities, it is a fundamental responsibility of the University to make research results available to the public through all conceivable methods, such as publishing academic papers, and making conference presentations.
With respect to intellectual property obtained in the course of conducting creative research activities at the University, it is also desirable where possible for the University to use them positively in service of society by developing patents and the like.
The first step for cooperation with other universities would be to enter into a certain type of mutual educational cooperation.
Thereafter, capital participation by the University of Karbala in many universities be considered.
These universities are: Baji Mukhtar University in Algeria, University of Damascus in Syria, University of Qatar in Qatar, Energy University in Azerbaijan, University of Tarbiya Modares in Iran and University of Al Shaheid Bahishty in Iran also.
Meanwhile, we are about to make the mutual educational cooperation with Liverpool University as well as Colorado University.
Sharing of educational duties among the above universities and University of Karbala is a matter subject to mutual cultural consultation.
